I'm a 56-year-old outdoorsman from Alberta (Canada). I share over 38 years of lessons with my fans, some of which have been learned the hard way. I'm into long-distance wilderness backpacking, canoeing, kayaking and general outdoor pursuits. I post videos of many adventures, but what I'm really passionate about is backpacking alone. I tend to do less popular hikes because I like to get away from people and challenge myself. I also post the occasional gear reviews and "how-to" videos on outdoor skills. I'm a professional engineer by training.
NOTE: Sales representatives, manufacturers, stores, etc. are free to send gear for evaluation, but this does not guarantee exposure within a full length trip video or a dedicated review video. If you send a good item (and I end up using and liking it) there's a high probability it will be featured in a trip video or review video.

Reolink Go Ranger PT camera review
Переглядів 821Місяць тому
I review the Reolink Go Ranger pan & tilt security/game camera. This is a high resolution camera with motion detector that transmit data and video over a 3G/ 4G LTE network. It's also solar powered. It's perfect for monitoring remote locations that don't have WiFi. I use it for security on my acreage, but it can also be used just for wildlife monitoring. My 25 years of working in the oil patch required that I be clean-shaven every day. When I got transferred to head office I started growing a beard, but I still had to shave it off regularly because of trips to the field. In 2020 the COVID pandemic forced me out of work, and I haven't had a clean-shaven face ever since. To be honest, my beard is part of my identity, and people recognize me becau...

Solo overnight hike on the "shortest day" of the year
Переглядів 2,3 тис.6 місяців тому
I hike to Fitzsimmons Creek in Kananaskis, Alberta, a place I've visited many times before. The winter solstice occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun. This happened on December 21, 2023 at 8:27 pm where I live in Alberta. This is the day with the shortest period of daylight and longest night of the year, and when the Sun is at its lowest daily maximum el...
10 days / 180 km loop in the spectacular Bighorn Backcountry
Переглядів 3,4 тис.7 місяців тому
This is a 10-day adventure in the Bighorn Backcountry (Job/Cline Public Land Use Zone "P.L.U.Z" ) and the White Goat Wilderness. Along the way we ford Coral Creek, the Brazeau River and the Cline River. We also crest Grey Pass (2,575 m), Red Pass (2,850 m) and Cline Pass (2,375 m). This is a very remote, seldom visited part of the eastern slopes. Horses are not allowed in White Goat wilderness,...

Good review. What SIM card/ carrier did you use.
For this test I just pulled out the one from my phone. I'm with VIrgin Mobile, and it worked just fine.
@@Martyupnorth Thanks for the reply. I have seen others use Eiotclub cards just curious. Cheers
Would it work without belt loops? And with a drop leg holster?
How big is your pack? Liters?
How's your thumb Marty ? Hope everything is going well for you !
First time viewer, but now I am going to look for the other videos of this trip! How many total KM was this hike?
About 45 if memory serves me correctly. I always put links to my CalTop itinerary in the description. Feel free to ask any question about this or other hikes. Cheers,
Are you associated with the small sports store in Caroline, Alberta.
@@Martyupnorth yes, I am the third generation in my family to own it :)
@@user-xh2db4lv5m cool. I stop in often.

Good Grief 😂
I don't know about this one Your advice is great yet I definitely have to ponder this one
wear them until they're dirty, turn them inside out and put em back on :).... and then if the trip is long, maybe burn em. less wait in your pack. :) too funny Marty !
If the stove is replaced with a Hornet 2, can it still fit into the 600ml Alti?
Conservatives are dumb AF 🤣
Ummmmm lol
When I go camping with you, I'm NOT eating!!!
Ok Marty, you’ve crossed the line here. Nobody washes dishes when camping. Everyone knows that.
😂😂😂 oh Marty, you made me laugh 🤣🤣🤣
Thks for the review, camera seems of much higher quality than the Campark/Voopeak range of 4G cameras which are cheaper but in fact more "toyish" than anything else !
Thank god you’re joking…… right ?
He's a Pierre Poilievre supporter, of course he's this trailer trashy
I’m also a strong conservative type , I was joking with him but I take it you’re more of a liberal type , sorry about your luck .
Umm i won't be able to make it to your place for dinner 😂
Big ol pot of E-coli 💩🤎☠️😂
I’m going camping and I’m bringing... E. coli! ;)
I’ll try this next time I’m out. 😂
You can also use your underware as toilet paper ! Why not cover all the bases!
Pro tip #2
Don't know if you are serious or joking.
I can read his face he just making me laugh
My wife is laughing so hard that she's snorting
Marty I love you man BUT no way I am washing my dishes with your dirty underwear. 😂🤣
Wow with business like this can possibly to loose a parts
Just bought a pair of Scarpa Kenisis and decided to see what UA-cam had to say about them. Nice to see they hold up to our Northern Canadian hunts and pack trips. Hope they are as good as my Redwings for water proof, i know they're a lot lighter!
Noice 👍
Thanks for the 33' motion detection range. I've looked all over for that info and couldn't find it. Very helpful.
Hi Marty my name is Guy I listen to you and Clyde lots , I like the Alberta premier Danielle Smith because she stands up , recently I found out that in her campaign words, she had said that she was going to lower taxes, and as far as I know, she has not done that I can’t seem to find out if there’s a reason for not, but it bothers me a lot when politicians make promises and they don’t stick to themcan you find more out about that or is there something I don’t know? Thank you Marty.
Hi Guy. I'm one of the many Albertans getting frustrated with Danielle. She's moving too slow. She made a big announcement about no tax breaks, saying that balancing the budget was a bigger priority. I call BS. She should have balanced the budget by cutting fat from government. I'm going easy on her because Trudeau is my priority, but I'm getting impatient. Just today I found out my insurance provider, Sonnet, is pulling the plug on Alberta.
Hi Marty:-) I am planning a solotrip to Banff Front Ranges this summer. Do you use a bear canister when you camp in the random camping zone? What plans do you have for the summer? Regards Nikolaj.
Hi. I just got home from a 7-day canoe trip. I won't do any big hikes this summer, as I'm busy with a lot of other projects. I've never used a canister or Ursak. My position on bears has been pretty clear for decades. I sleep with my food. Bears are curious and like to wander around exploring. A canister or a bag will simply make them linger around longer. I've been hiking and hunting in the wilderness for nearly 40 years, so my comfort level and risk tolerance is higher than most people. I use polls when they are available, and food lockers. BAckcountry bears are not at all like front country bears. Driving home yesterday, I saw 8 bears in 20 minutes while driving from Bowron LAke to Quesnel. It was unreal. how habituated they are...because no one hunts them anymore. Cheers.
Sweet spot brother!
Beautiful!!! ❤ In case you aren't aware that Michelle F has started a new petition e - 5024 to oust jt. It closes on Oct. 02/24, time to get a few million signatures! Pass this on ASAP!!!

Pure beauty Marty! Question, have u ever listened to the Canadian podcast canadian common sense?
Did they change out the material on the inside of the belt? You do not show that.
Wowzee wow wow❤
Nice property, must keep you pretty busy...
Nice. but the snow fence should be able to come down now.
Springbank, Bearspaw, Cochrane? Beautiful... ❤
Well done, Marty. Two birds. Flight time with the drone and a tour of your place. Awesome. Thank you.
Well done Marty.
Gorgeous Marty❣️
Very interesting. We’ve been looking at a lot of properties in Whitehorse with various challenges. Do you guys have a septic field and well? Electrical on the grid? Who plows the access to your driveway? Garbage?
Country living is not for everyone. It's a lot of work, and requires a lot of tools. We have a septic field. I blow the driveway with an ATV equipped with a plow. I do it 10-15 times per winter. We pay for garbage disposal. I got tired of riving to the dump. We belong to a water co-op. I had a water well on my previous 3 properties, which is a lot of work. But I would not trade it for city life.
@@Martyupnorth You got that right! Good job. Thanks for sharing Marty. 😘
